The Art of
Reflexology
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is an ancient art of relaxation and stress reduction that originated in Egypt and China. A “map” of the whole body is found on the feet, hands and ears and, when a reflex area is touched, it has a reflexive and homeostatic effect on the corresponding body part. It can affect the muscular, nervous, circulatory or glandular systems.
What is so special about the feet?
The feet are your base and your contact with the earth. They contain 7,000 nerve endings, making them very sensitive. Have you ever felt like you had a rock in your shoe, only to find it was a tiny pebble? The tiny pebble was being sensed by multiple nerves on the sole of your foot. Aside from being incredibly sensitive, your feet also absorb shock and help you keep your balance. They are also the furthest point away from the heart, where gravity may carry toxins in the blood or where swelling may occur.

•Reduces stress and induces deep relaxation
•Enhances circulation, reduces swelling
•Brings the body and its systems into balance
•Revitalizes energy
•After a session, you may feel more relaxed, have more energy and your feet will feel great!
What is a Reflexology treatment like?
While reclining face up on a massage table, the reflexologist applies lotion and warms your feet with massage designed to begin working specific relaxation reflexes. Next, thumb pressure is applied to areas of your feet, one foot at a time and within your pain tolerance. Reflexology should not hurt; the reflexologist can adjust pressure and vary techniques to accommodate your level of sensitivity.
Can Reflexology relieve pain from certain foot ailments?
Reflexology helps to relax the foot and ankle through reflex points by relaxing the tendons and ligaments in the foot. In turn, this may have a positive effect on many common foot problems.
How long is a Reflexology session?
The first session typically takes over an hour, giving the reflexologist time to fully assess your feet and to note the problem spots. Subsequent sessions will last for 60 minutes and will concentrate on areas of sensitivity and other important reflexes tailored to your individual needs.
